Why Google Is Still the Only Game in Town

If you’ve read a marketing headline in the last two years, you’ve probably felt the panic. The narrative is everywhere: "Search is dead," "ChatGPT is taking over," and "You need to optimize for AI chatbots immediately."
It makes for great clickbait, but as a business owner, you don't pay your bills with clickbait. You pay them with traffic and conversions.
While everyone else is chasing the shiny new object of "ranking on ChatGPT," I’ve been looking at the hard data. And the data tells a very different story.
The Numbers Don't Lie
According to a fresh study released in October 2025 by Klatch, the search engine landscape isn't nearly as fragmented as the tech pundits want you to believe. When we look at actual market share, the gap between the giant and the challenger isn't just a gap—it’s a canyon.
Here is the current search engine market share as of October 2025:
- Google: 89.54%
- Bing: 3.95%
- Yandex: 2.45%
- Yahoo: 1.37%
- DuckDuckGo: 0.86%
- Baidu: 0.73%
- ChatGPT: 0.2%
0.2% vs. 90%: Where Should Your Budget Go?
Look closely at that last number. ChatGPT holds a 0.2% market share.
In the world of digital marketing, 0.2% is essentially a rounding error. Yet, I see businesses tearing up their SEO strategies to cater to a platform that isn't even cracking 1% of the global search volume.
Meanwhile, Google is holding strong at nearly 90%.
This means that for every 1,000 people looking for your products or services, 895 of them are searching on Google. Only 2 of them are asking ChatGPT.
The Danger of "Shiny Object Syndrome"
In my work at RichKeller.com, I see this happen all the time. Companies get distracted by the newest trend and neglect the foundation that actually drives revenue.
Optimizing for ChatGPT is interesting, and it may be relevant in the near future. But right now? Prioritizing ChatGPT over Google is like opening a lemonade stand in a deserted alleyway because you heard a rumor that a highway might be built there in a few years—while ignoring the thousands of thirsty customers walking past you on Main Street right now.
Effective SEO is about probability. You go where the people are.
Stick to What Drives Revenue
The fundamentals of Google SEO—high-quality content, technical health, authority building, and user experience—are still the most powerful tools we have to grow a business online.
Google isn't going anywhere. It is still the primary way human beings discover new information, vet services, and make purchasing decisions.
