10 Things Digital Marketers Say (And What They Actually Mean)

Let’s be honest: the digital marketing world is full of acronyms, shifting algorithms, and acronyms about shifting algorithms. If you don’t laugh at the daily chaos of building websites and chasing rankings, you’ll probably end up crying into your cold coffee.

To keep us all sane, here are ten totally accurate, completely serious* definitions of what web designers, SEOs, and digital marketers are actually dealing with on a daily basis.

1. "We need to focus on user experience (UX)."
Translation: "I spent three hours hiding a popup that the client is going to force me to put back on the homepage tomorrow anyway."

2. "The algorithm changed."
Translation: "The internet broke, nothing makes sense anymore, and I will be spending my weekend reading frantic forum posts from stranger's basements."

3. "Let’s make it pop."
Translation: "I have absolutely no technical vocabulary to describe what I want, but I’ll know it when I see it. Probably after 14 more revisions."

4. "We’re focusing on search intent."
Translation: "We are desperately trying to figure out why a human being would type that specific string of typos into a search box at 2:00 AM."

5. "It’s responsive design."
Translation: "It looks gorgeous on a 27-inch monitor, passable on a phone, and like an absolute crime scene if you open it on a smart fridge."

6. "The content is optimized for AI search."
Translation: "I wrote this to satisfy a machine, to give an answer to another machine, so that hopefully a human occasionally clicks a link."

7. "Our strategy is data-driven."
Translation: "We found one graph where the line went up, and we are going to ride that wave until the client asks for a refund."

8. "That’s a legacy feature."
Translation: "If I delete that single line of code from 2018, the entire server will instantly burst into flames."

9. "Let’s pivot to AEO." Translation: "We need to format our answers so perfectly that smart speakers can read them aloud to people who are actively trying to ignore them."

10. "The site is ready for launch."
Translation: "Please stop looking at it. Clear your cache, close your eyes, and pray to the hosting gods."

😂BONUS JOKE

An SEO expert walks into a bar...

Or at least, they tried to, but they got hit with a massive penalty for unnatural internal linking, redirected to a completely different tavern across town, and now they’re stuck waiting three months for the bartender to recrawl their request for a beer.
